What is average view duration on YouTube?

Average view duration is a YouTube Analytics metric that shows the average minutes watched among those who stayed to watch. For Shorts it is calculated from engaged views and their corresponding watch time. It tells you how long a typical viewing session lasted, not how many people arrived.

Why average view duration matters

Views tell you how many people started. Average view duration tells you how long they stayed. 2 videos with the same views can have very different durations, and the one with the longer duration is holding attention better.

The number moves with video length, so a 2-minute video and a 20-minute video are not comparable on raw minutes. Read it next to audience retention, which shows how well different moments of your video held viewers’ attention.

How to check average view duration

For a single video:

1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.

2. From the left menu, select Content.

3. On the selected video, select Analytics.

4. From the top menu, select Engagement.

What the August 2026 view change means

Since August 24, 2026, YouTube counts views the moment a video starts to play across all formats, including Shorts, long-form videos and live streams. YouTube states that this update does not affect YouTube Partner Program earnings or eligibility: earnings are still based on engaged views and engaged watch hours, and eligibility is still based on qualified views.

YouTube may also temporarily slow down, freeze or change a metric count while it confirms the engagement came from real people, and it discards low-quality playbacks. Watching the same video on several devices, or streaming it across several windows and tabs, are the examples YouTube gives.
