🚀 The State of YouTube 2026: Creators’ Guide to What’s Coming

Engagement Rate YouTube

What is engagement rate on YouTube?

Engagement rate on YouTube is the share of viewers who interact with a video instead of only watching it: likes, comments, shares and new subscribers measured against views. YouTube Analytics does not report a single engagement rate figure, so creators calculate it from the engagement metrics Studio does report.

Why engagement rate matters

YouTube treats views, likes, dislikes and subscriptions as engagement metrics and describes them as a measure of how many times your video or channel has been interacted with. A high rate tells you the people who arrived actually cared, which is a different signal from reach. Two videos with the same view count can differ sharply in comments and new subscribers, and that gap tends to show up later in returning viewers.

These metrics are filtered before you see them. YouTube may temporarily slow down, freeze or change your counts while it confirms them, and it discards low-quality playbacks such as the same video streamed across several devices, windows or tabs. Likes marked invalid are removed periodically, so a rate calculated on publication day can still move.

Where to check engagement in YouTube Studio

Engagement is a video-level tab. Sign in to YouTube Studio, select Content in the left menu, open Analytics on the video, then select Engagement in the top menu. The key metrics card shows watch time and average view duration, and for Shorts it also shows engaged views. YouTube documents the tab in its help article on audience engagement.

The Engagement tab holds 4 reports:

  • Audience retention: key moments that held viewers, plus typical retention compared with your 10 latest videos of similar length.

  • Likes (vs. dislikes): how many viewers liked and disliked your videos. The metric can be added at channel level in the expanded analytics report.

  • End screen element click rate: how often viewers clicked each end screen element. It appears only after you open a specific video.

  • Top remixed: your content that was remixed into Shorts, with the number of remixes and remix views.

How to calculate engagement rate

Add the interactions you care about, usually likes, comments, shares and subscribers gained, divide by views for the same period and the same content type, then multiply by 100. Keep the formula fixed: a comparison between videos only holds when the inputs stay identical.

One input changed recently. Since 24 August 2026 YouTube counts a view the moment a video starts to play, across Shorts, long-form videos and live streams. Views is now a larger and earlier number, so rates from before and after that date are not directly comparable. YouTube Partner Program earnings and eligibility are unaffected: earnings still run on engaged views and engaged watch hours, and eligibility on qualified views.
