🚀 The State of YouTube 2026: Creators’ Guide to What’s Coming

What is SEO on YouTube?

YouTube SEO (search engine optimization) is the practice of making videos easier to find in YouTube search. It covers the title, the description and the content itself, so a video matches what viewers type into the search bar and keeps them watching after the click.

According to YouTube's official guidance, search results are ranked by 2 main factors: how well the title, description and video content match the viewer's query, and which videos drive the most engagement for that search. Search results are not a list of the most-viewed videos.

Engagement signals matter more than metadata. YouTube's systems use average view duration and average percentage viewed to inform ranking, and measure satisfaction through likes and post-watch surveys. That is why watch time and CTR work as a pair: the click wins the impression, and retention confirms the video matched the query.

  • Write titles that accurately represent the content. YouTube warns against deceptive, sensational phrasing and titles in ALL CAPS.

  • Use the description to state the topic in the words viewers actually search with.

  • Do not rely on tags: YouTube says they are not important for discovery and mainly help correct common spelling mistakes.

  • Changing a title or thumbnail can re-rank a video, but only because viewers start interacting with it differently. If a video already performs well, YouTube advises not to change what is working.

  • Publish time is not known to affect a video's long-term performance.

Search is only one discovery surface: the YouTube algorithm also recommends videos on Home and under Up Next. For a step-by-step optimization plan, see our guide YouTube SEO in 2026.
