🚀 The State of YouTube 2026: Creators’ Guide to What’s Coming

Traffic Sources

What are traffic sources on YouTube?

Traffic sources on YouTube are the places viewers came from before they watched your video. The report splits them into traffic from within YouTube, such as search or suggested videos, and traffic from external sites and apps.

Why traffic sources matter

Two videos with the same view count can have very different futures. One pulled its views from YouTube search and keeps earning them for months; the other got a spike from notifications and stopped. The report tells you which one you have.

It also shows where a fix belongs. Few impressions from browse features points at reach, plenty of impressions with a low CTR points at the thumbnail and title, and good clicks with short watch time points at the video itself.

Types of traffic sources

Traffic comes either from within YouTube or from external sources, and you see both on the “How viewers find this video” card. Within YouTube the report uses these categories:

  • Browse features — Home, subscriptions, Watch Later, Trending/Explore and other browsing features.

  • Channel pages — your YouTube channel or other YouTube channels.

  • Campaign cards — content owner campaign cards.

  • End screens — creator end screens.

  • Shorts — the Shorts vertical viewing experience.

  • Notifications — notifications and emails sent to your subscribers.

  • Other YouTube features — traffic from within YouTube that falls in no other category.

  • Playlists — any playlist that included one of your videos, yours or another creator's, including “Liked videos” and “Favorite videos”.

  • Remixed video — visual remixes of your content.

  • Sound pages — the shared audio results page in the Shorts vertical viewing experience.

  • Suggested videos — suggestions next to or after other videos, and links in video descriptions.

  • Video cards — a card in another video.

  • YouTube advertising — your video used as an ad on YouTube.

  • YouTube search — YouTube search results.

  • Product pages — YouTube product pages.

Outside YouTube there are 2 categories. External sources covers websites and apps that embed or link to your video. Direct or unknown sources covers direct URL entry, bookmarks, signed out viewers and unidentified apps.

How to check your traffic sources

The report sits in the Reach tab of a single video's analytics, on the “How viewers find this video” card. In the YouTube Studio app for Android: open the app, tap Content, select the video, tap the Analytics card, then tap Reach. Some reports are not available on mobile devices.

3 more cards in the same tab break the numbers down: “Traffic source: YouTube Search” lists the terms viewers searched, “Traffic source: Suggested videos” lists the videos sending viewers your way, and “Traffic source: Playlists” lists the playlists. Channel-wide trends live in YouTube Analytics. If search is the weak column, our YouTube SEO guide for 2026 covers what to change.
